MEN JOIN TOGETHER CONFERENCE 2011 * RECAP

If you missed the Men Join Together Conference 2011, don't fret, look forward to attending this exciting series of Men joining together to talk about their life experiences in 2012! Recently, we attended the Men Join Together Conference 2011, which was hosted at North Park Branch Library in Evansville, Indiana. The theme was "Men Join Together: Which One Are You?" Are you a Filler, Watcher, Teacher, Seeker, or Messenger. The room filled quickly with people who wanted to be there. The seating was set in theatre style, and a overhead screen mounted on the wall displayed pictures and biography's of all the men who would be speaking. The audience was a mixture of young and old from all walks of life. Although, the target was focused on men, there were women present, as well. Two women in particular served organic coffee and tea. There were a total of six African American men who poured out their hearts about their personal life experiences, and elaborated on the character that they felt best represented them. For instance, one gentlemen chose the Filler, and describe what a filler was from a football player's point of view. Another, describe himself as a Messenger, and shared biblical teachings to reach the audience. Whereas, one used a simple potato to describe life as a Teacher. The highlight of the event was expressed from the keynote speaker who traveled from Indianapolis, Indiana, to join this special group of men. He illustrated himself as being a Seeker and used a photo image of a maze to pin-point his walk through life. Other highlights of the event were the testimonies of men who had been diagnosed with illnesses, and others who suffered severe bodily injuries, a gunshot wound to the body, a severe head injury, and survivor of cancer. It was continuous testimonies greeted with applauses from the audience. The evening ended with a special presentation of Certificates of Appreciation for "Men Mentoring Men," awarded to all of the guest speakers. The overall event was very professional, and extremely pleasant. After attending this wonderful event, everyone including the public was invited to attend a fellowship dinner at a local restaurant.

On Saturday, October 8, 2011, a group of men throughout the community gathered together in prayer on the South Side of Evansville, Indiana. The mission was to canvass the area to deter future gang violence. Over several church leaders were involved in the march and witnessed to individuals throughout the community. It is a true saying that "Strength is in numbers," and hopefully, this group of dedicated men will continue to bond and reclaim the neighborhoods for God's glory.

A native of Tuscumbia, Alabama, David, spent most of his childhood years dreaming of owning his own youth center. After graduating from high school, Nixon attended Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama.

Nixon was awarded "Teacher of the Year," at Northwest Shoals Community College, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, for the Alternative School on campus and Community Life Coordinator for on-campus living.He attended the Michigan National Guard School of Administration in Lansing, Michigan. In the early 80s, his dream was to become a free agent to play pro football in Chicago. In addition, he became a member of the Central Football League (CFL) Association for certified officials.

In 1995, David, opened the doors to his 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Young Gentlemen and Women 2000.

The YG/W mission statement is to instruct, train, and enhance positive character traits from negative thinking in young people. He is a faith based business consultant supporter, motivational speaker for at risk youth and adult reentry.

Nixon and his wife developed a parent involvement program entitled Parent Ambassadors Inc., which was created to get parents more involved with their children in Title I public schools through the volunteer parent involvement program.

In 2002, Nixon registered and ran as an Independent Non-Partisan Gubernatorial Candidate in the State of Michigan. He was the second African American to run in the State of Michigan.

In 2007, Nixon registered and ran as a grassroots Republican Candidate for Mayor in the State of Indiana, and the City of Evansville. He was the first African American to win the primary election in over 109 years, and raised no funds.

In addition, David J. Nixon is an Independent Christian Clergymen, affiliated with World Christianship Ministries. He is the founder of the non-denomination Faith Based Organization "Hebrews, Matthew, Genesis, and Galatians (H.M.G.G.) Ministries." Nixon's online Blogger site focuses on various topics like, community involvement, economic development, adult reentry, and features pastoral guest speakers, faith based discussions and world views.

My husband came back to the car with a tall man. He stood about 6'7, with long thick hair, and wearing no shirt with a big belly. My husband had told him about our situation and he offered to take us where he thought the other drivers were stranded in Indianapolis. Praise God! The peculiar man took us right to the location where the other drivers were parked. I asked him what was his name, and he simply said "Sunny." I responded by saying "Oh! Sunny, like the sunshine." He just smiled and drove away. The other drivers were re-adjusting our things on the trailer-beds and truck. After re-arranging everything we did not know what direction to take to get back on the freeway. A peculiar couple who resided close by was hosting an outdoor gathering, and stopped over to see if we needed any help. Again, we told them our situation and they directed us to the right freeway exits to get back onto the road. PRAISE GOD!, HIS mercy endured for us a second time in the same day. We arrived in my hometown around midnight. No one was there to greet us, and it began to rain. After making several attempts to contact the individuals that we had the housing arrangements with, we settled at my relatives residence for the night. It continued to rain and we had nowhere to store our furniture along with the other items loaded on the trailer-beds. The following morning, we were greeted by another peculiar man, who stood about 6'2. He had been communicating with my husband from our first visit in my hometown, and offered to help us get our furniture out of the rain, and placed into storage. I decided to go to church, for morning service, and also to find out about our arrangement for our living situation. During the morning service, the individuals whom we had the arrangement with, was out of the country and a church member conducted the morning service. The message was very harsh and directed towards me and my family. I whispered to my daughter, "The devil is angry at us today, we have a BIG blessing on the way." Several comments were spoken in the pulpit. As I sat there, I realized that this was all a design to cause chaos and confusion with my husband. We were left hanging, and what were we going to do? Those words, kept ringing in my mind "What were we going to do?"

As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

We never returned to the church to fellowship after that morning service. However, after a few weeks had passed we were contacted by the individuals of the church to have a meeting to discuss the entire situation. We expressed our concerns and we all agreed that our conversation would not leave the room. Unfortunately, we found out later, that a chain letter had been sent to all the local churches, and in the chain letter it mentioned that my husband and me were not to be trusted, and that my husband was a con artists. In addition, the people who wrote the letter said that we took tithes and offering monies from the church, and that the first ladies of their churches should not speak to me because I was not one of them.

PSALM 64:7-8

But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

My husband and me were so disappointed to hear this news about the chain letter being circulated around other local churches. Why would they go to that extreme to sow discord among the people in the community? We never saw them again or made mention to anyone regarding the vicious gossip and chain letter circulated around town. We just simply kept silent and let God handle it. For an entire year we were silent as the talk continued in my hometown.

PSALM 39:1-2

I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me. I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

We spent all of our finances living in a hotel with our children. Running low on cash flow, my husband said "God will supply our needs, don't worry keep the faith." We began to pray. We asked the Lord to make a way out of no way, and he did! The Lord touched the heart of yet, another peculiar man, who stood about 5'11 to 6'0 tall. He was a realtor and had a place for us to move into right away.

EXODUS 19:5 - Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine.

You know God has a since of humor. He moved us into the same neighborhood where the church member who spoke during Sunday, morning service resided, who asked the question in the pulpit, "What are you going to do now?"

PRAISE GOD! HIS mercy and his grace endures forever. It was to let them know that we were alright.

You're probably wondering why I keep quoting the height of the men we encountered in each case. Why?, because we serve a TALL GOD! an AWESOME GOD! and he handles TALL CASES.

PRAISE REPORT!

GOD not only blessed us with a new home, he blessed us with our own faith based community center. We support both the youth and senior citizens. We were blessed with computers, chairs, desks, carpet, and accessories for our youth development and mentoring center. GOD sent strangers to give donations and help build the exterior and interior needs at our facility. HE IS AN AWESOME GOD! Remember, God will always have a ram in the bush for you, when you submit to HIM.

GENESIS 22:13-14 - And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place "The Lord will provide," as it is to this day, "On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided."

UPDATE ON THE YG/W YOUTH CENTER:

In 2005, due to the heavy volume of harassment and ill-treatment YG/W staff members and families in the community received from some local church leaders, we made the decision for safety reasons to close our doors to protect at-risk youth who attended the YG/W Learning Center after school.

Young Gentlemen and Women (YG/W) will continue to reach out to troubled at-risk youth nationwide and will help one student at a time until all have become productive citizens in life.

In 2004, DAVID J. NIXON, made history as Evansville's first Black President of the Southside Kiwanis Club. He was re-elected as President for a second term in 2005.

THE KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION was established as a legal entity in 1939. The mission is to assist Kiwanis International in serving the children of the world.

NIXON SAYS FAREWELL TO THE SOUTHSIDE KIWANIS CLUB IN 2006

To my fellow Southside Kiwanians,

It has been an exciting journey and great experience for us all as a team. I want to thank all of you that showed support during my two-term reign as the Evansville Southside Kiwanis President. This is just the beginning dear friends. I've had the opportunity to be involved with a group of men and women that love their community and the youth. As a new Charter in the Evansville/Vanderburgh County, together we managed to support the "Bringing Up A Grade" (BUG) Program at Lincoln Elementary School, Family Day In The Park, Feed A Family, Southside Kiwanis Variety Show, and families affected by KATRINA. We have raised over $5,000.00, in fundraising throughout the 2004-05 year, and I am proud to say that we have accomplished a great amount of charitable contributions in such a short period of time in the Evansville area.

In the Project Account there is a remaining balance of $2,054.29, and in the Administrative Account there is a remaining balance of $1,917.89.

On behalf of my family and I, we wish to thank the following:Green River Kiwanis, Steve Page, Terry White, Helen Fisher, Formal Governor Donovan Peoples, newly elected Governor Pat Hawkins, most of all Sergeant-At-Arms, Bill George, and to all of the Evansville Southside Kiwanis members.

BAPTIST AND CATHOLIC? A GREAT COMBINATION!

David J. Nixon, had the opportunity to work at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in 2004-05. Being a Baptist minister and working with an African American female Catholic Pastoral Life Coordinator, may seem rather odd, however, we must remember, that God's thoughts are not our thoughts, and his ways are not our ways. "There are twelve religions but ONE Lord," says Nixon.

David J. Nixon, was the coordinator of St. John's Youth Group, and worked with young people in the church, conducting Sunday, Bible Class, creating positive behavior projects, supervised youth outings, youth development programs, fundraisers, getting items donated to the youth group activity room, hosted poetry nights for young people, hands-on basic computer training, and youth fitness nutrition programs. David and his wife, also did outreach ministry and worked with youth throughout the community.

He was asked to speak at St. Mary's Catholic Church, during the Martin Luther King Jr., Birthday Celebration, sponsored by the Downtown Ministers Association. Nixon's speech was "We Have A Dream." The most humbling moment for David, was meeting the Bishop of Evansville. Before relocating to the city of Evansville, he had an opportunity to sit under the leadership of a Baptist Bishop for the District of Michigan. Having the opportunity to meet the Catholic Bishop of Evansville was a great honor. He is also a member of the Downtown Ministers Association, Youth Task Force Committee for Parks and Recreations, and the Buffalo Trace Scout Committee.

David J. Nixon, resigned from St. John the Apostle Catholic Church on June 10, 2005. It was not due to any animosity or ill-discord in his own words "My mission was completed at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, and HE has called me to a new assignment" says Nixon.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS TRAINING FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN AND MULTI ETHNIC MALES

Young Gentlemen and Women (YG/W) 2000, offers consultation in leadership development and mentoring community service to low-income families and youth. The goal is to instruct, train, and develop positive programs for at risk youth on how to handle conflicts constructively in their lives, and to become self-sufficient citizens. Youth are welcome to participate in the program.

David J. Nixon founded the Young Gentlemen and Women 501 c 3 nonprofit organizaton in 1999, and looks forward to offering community services to youth nationwide to help develop the minds of at risk youth on how to handle conflicts more constructively in todays society.

In 2004, 650,000 people were released from prisons across the country, 14,000 individuals in Indiana were released from state prison facilities. $656 million is spent annually on Indiana prisons, and 97 percent of those in Indiana prisons will eventually return to their communities. The failure occurs seven- (7) to twenty-one- (21) days after their release. If there is no opportunity to find work, housing or transportation for medical and probation appointments, they will look to other means to survive.
